Building phase synchronization equivalence between coupled bursting neurons and phase oscillators

چکیده
Bursting neurons are characterized by an alternation of active and inactive state, during the active state they exhibit train of spikes and quiescent behavior in the inactive state. When bursting neurons are coupled they can synchronize depending on the coupling strength. If the coupling strength is increased above a critical value, a transition from an asynchronous state to a partial synchronized state can be observed. This transition has the same type observed in coupledKuramoto oscillators. When the natural frequency distribution of the oscillators is properly defined, the bursting neurons and the Kuramoto oscillators describe the same phase transition for synchronization.

Effect of Coupling Types on Synchronization of Weakly Coupled Bursting Neurons
Weak coupling connections are ubiquitous in neuronal system. For neurons with both spiking and bursting dynamics, bursting synchronization, which has been found to be related with a number of abnormal brain rhythms, is easier to occur at smaller synaptic strengths. In this paper, we examine the effect of the synaptic types on the synchronization properties of the weakly coupled bursting neurona...
متن کاملChaotic phase synchronization in small-world networks of bursting neurons.
We investigate the chaotic phase synchronization in a system of coupled bursting neurons in small-world networks. A transition to mutual phase synchronization takes place on the bursting time scale of coupled oscillators, while on the spiking time scale, they behave asynchronously. It is shown that phase synchronization is largely facilitated by a large fraction of shortcuts, but saturates when...
متن کاملEffect of Sharp Jumps at the Edges of Phase Response Curves on Synchronization of Electrically Coupled Neuronal Oscillators
We study synchronization phenomenon of coupled neuronal oscillators using the theory of weakly coupled oscillators. The role of sudden jumps in the phase response curve profiles found in some experimental recordings and models on the ability of coupled neurons to exhibit synchronous and antisynchronous behavior is investigated, when the coupling between the neurons is electrical. The level of j...
متن کاملPhase synchronization of inhibitory bursting neurons induced by distributed time delays in chemical coupling.
Considering the fact that signal transmission time delays between different pairs of synaptically coupled neurons in the brain are different, we study the effects of distributed time delays on phase synchronization of bursting neurons. We consider the case of inhibitory coupled bursting Hindmarsh-Rose neurons and find that distributed time delays in chemical coupling can induce a variety of pha...
متن کاملSynchronization in Neuronal Networks with Electrical and Chemical Coupling
Synchronized cortical activities in the central nervous systems of mammals are crucial for sensory perception, coordination, and locomotory function. The neuronal mechanisms that generate synchronous synaptic inputs in the neocortex are far from being fully understood. This thesis contributes toward an understanding of the emergence of synchronization in networks of bursting neurons as a highly...
